Good Friday evening! I have been listening to news of the stock market falling 2,200 points today. My parents, one of whom is a veteran, opened 529 accounts so their grandchildren can go to college. My dad worked in a steel mill for 30 years to put aside a little money. Now that hard earned money is going up in smoke thanks to the Trump tariffs. Tariffs are a tax. Tariffs are going to make people have to spend more money on groceries and everything else. You know about groceries, but I am not sure that our President does. Did you see him try to define the word? Has he ever gone grocery shopping? Does he know what will happen to prices of imported fruits and vegetables at Kroger with these stupid tariffs? I don’t think he knows or cares. He is too busy golfing. It has been noted that he has golfed six out of seven weekends at a cost to the taxpayers of more than $18 million dollars! ( He didn’t even approve the hit on the Houthi rebels! He did not even know about the Signal chat! He was golfing!) When he gets done golfing with the Saudis (!), he has million dollar per plate dinners at Mar A Lago. What does he care about what we pay for bananas for Cheerios or avocados for guacamole? And the most awful part? He decided to golf instead of being present as the Commander in Chief to receive the bodies of our fallen soldiers that died in military service in Lithuania. The Lithuanian people were more respectful and dedicated to the memory of our fallen soldiers than the President of the United States! Of course, this makes sense. The President does not care about our veterans or active military members. He thinks they are “suckers” and “losers”. He is cutting 800,000 jobs from the Veterans Administration, including staff fro the veterans suicide prevention line. He used sacred ground, Arlington National Cemetery, as a photo op and then erased the memory of many people of color, women, and military members who were LGBTQ+. Some of information about our greatest military leaders had the links to their bios taken down. These include but are not limited to the Navajo Code Talkers, the Tuskegee Airmen, and General Colin Powell. You have the constitutional responsibility as a member of the legislative branch to check the power of the executive branch. (Who the heck elected Elon Musk anyway?) Executive orders are not laws. Congress makes laws. The fifth graders that I teach know that. You have the ability to roll back these tariffs, stop an unelected non citizen from destroying our government, and check the royal ambitions of the President.
