I am writing to urge you to support impeachment proceedings against President Trump based on his repeated threats to seize Greenland by force. These threats alone constitute sufficient grounds for impeachment, and Congress must act now before any military action occurs that would cause irreparable damage to our alliances.
Trump has escalated his rhetoric dramatically in recent days. At a news conference with oil executives, he stated he was "going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not." On Wednesday, he posted on Truth Social that American control of Greenland is necessary for national security and that "anything less than that is unacceptable." These are not hypothetical musings but explicit threats against a territory belonging to Denmark, a NATO ally with whom we have maintained friendship for over 200 years.
Republican Representative Don Bacon has stated he would "lean" toward supporting impeachment if Trump orders an invasion, calling the idea "utter buffoonery" and warning it would be "catastrophic to our allies." While I appreciate his co-sponsorship of the No Funds for NATO Invasion Act, waiting until an invasion actually occurs is too late. The damage to our international standing is already underway. Danish and Greenlandic officials have firmly rejected these threats, and a bipartisan congressional delegation is traveling to Copenhagen this Friday specifically to reassure our allies that Trump's threats do not reflect American values.
The threshold for impeachment should be the serious threat to invade an ally, not the execution of that threat. Once military action begins, the harm to NATO cohesion and our global credibility becomes permanent. I expect you to advocate for immediate impeachment proceedings based on Trump's public statements threatening military force against a NATO ally. Our alliances depend on Congress acting decisively now, not after the damage is done.
