NV Energy is on track to change the way Southern Nevada families pay for electricity by adding a daily demand charge to residential bills to begin January of 2027. Instead of simply paying based on how much electricity is used over the course of a month, the new charge is based on the highest 15-minute period of electricity use EACH DAY. That means running several major appliances at once, even for a short period, can increase what is owed. The charge resets every day, making a monthly bill harder to predict. This is being inflicted on residents, but I have yet to hear if it will also be forced upon businesses. I'm wondering if there is a connection between this daily demand charge and data centers. Is this daily demand charge a fear tactic and punishment to residents in an effort to keep energy use at a minimum in order to supply ample energy to data centers and other industrial high-energy users? Maybe a government official-such as yourself - should investigate. It's my understanding that the PUCN board [that approved the rate structing] is appointed by the governor. The governor, as well as other legislators, need to do the right thing for the citizens of Nevada. In my opinion, this is yet another result of allowing utility monopolies in Nevada (which needs to be addressed as well). Stop NV Energy’s Daily Demand Charge.
