Protect Passport Access for Transgender and Non-Binary Individuals

To: Rep. Dexter, Sen. Wyden, Sen. Merkley

From: A constituent in Portland, OR

March 6, 2025

I am writing to urge you to support policies that allow individuals to update their gender markers on identification documents without unnecessary barriers. The ability to self-identify and have legal documents that match one’s gender is critical for dignity and safety. Restrictive policies force transgender people into situations where their IDs out them, putting them at risk of discrimination and violence. I urge you to support legislation that streamlines the process of updating gender markers on federal documents and to uphold the fundamental right of individuals to be identified in the gender of their choice through the use of form DS-5504.
