Demand Accountability for Campus Sexual Violence and Protect Survivors

To: Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A verified voter in Arnold, MD

September 28

Sexual violence on campuses is not a fringe problem — it is a systemic one, and wealthy, well-connected perpetrators keep escaping accountability while survivors are silenced. That has to end. I need you to push for stronger federal enforcement of Title IX, mandatory criminal referrals when universities mishandle assault reports, and real consequences for institutions that protect perpetrators over survivors. Universities like Cornell have demonstrated exactly what happens when institutions prioritize reputation over justice. Survivors are dismissed, cases are buried, and the men responsible face no meaningful consequences. This pattern repeats itself because the law allows it to. Strengthen penalties for institutional cover-ups, close the loopholes that let schools handle violent crimes internally, and make clear that no amount of money or social standing shields anyone from prosecution. Survivors deserve a system that fights for them — not one they have to fight against.
