Seek negotiated solution for Gaza, avoid unilateral US occupation

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. Peters

From: A verified voter in San Diego, CA

February 5

The proposal to deploy US troops for long-term ownership and rebuilding of Gaza raises significant concerns. It is an overreach for the US military to occupy and control foreign territory in this manner. Such an intervention could destabilize the region further and escalate tensions, undermining prospects for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The United States should instead focus its efforts on supporting an internationally-backed political process aimed at achieving a negotiated two-state solution. This would involve facilitating dialogue between Israeli and Palestinian leaders to reach a mutually-agreed settlement addressing borders, security, the status of Jerusalem, and the rights of refugees. Any rebuilding and development efforts in Gaza should be led by the Palestinian people themselves, with humanitarian and economic assistance from the international community. Unilateral US military occupation and reconstruction would likely be seen as an imposition and may fuel further resentment and violence, the opposite of bringing lasting peace and prosperity to the people of Gaza. A negotiated political solution respecting Palestinian self-determination is the wiser path forward.
