The SAVE Act is an unnecessary and harmful piece of legislation that would disenfranchise millions of eligible American voters. It imposes burdensome requirements on citizens to prove their identity and citizenship status beyond what is already mandated by existing laws. Notably, the bill fails to recognize marriage certificates as valid proof of name changes, which could prevent tens of millions of married women from being able to register or update their voter registration due to name mismatches between IDs and birth certificates. This disproportionately impacts women and creates an undue barrier to exercising their constitutional right to vote. There is no evidence of widespread illegal voting by non-citizens that would justify such draconian measures. I urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and protect the voting rights of all eligible American citizens, including married women who have legally changed their names. Upholding free and fair elections is paramount, but the SAVE Act undermines that very principle under the guise of election security.
