I am writing to urge you to support new legislation that would exempt Medicare from automatic cuts triggered by H.R. 1, the "One Big Beautiful Bill" Act. While this bill does not directly cut Medicare, its impact on the federal deficit will activate the Pay-As-You-Go Act, resulting in devastating consequences for seniors and healthcare providers in our community.
The mathematics are stark. H.R. 1's increase to the federal deficit will trigger PAYGO's automatic enforcement mechanism, leading to an estimated $490 billion in Medicare cuts over the next decade. By January 2026, Medicare payments to hospitals, doctors, and providers face a 4% reduction. This is not a theoretical concern but an imminent threat with a specific timeline.
These cuts will directly harm the healthcare infrastructure that our seniors depend on. A 4% reduction in Medicare payments will force difficult decisions on providers already operating on thin margins. Hospitals may reduce services, physicians may limit the number of Medicare patients they accept, and rural healthcare facilities could face closure. The seniors in your district who were promised Medicare would remain untouched now face the reality of diminished access to care.
The irony is profound. H.R. 1 includes $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts while simultaneously setting in motion automatic Medicare reductions through budgetary mechanisms. This circumvents the promise that Medicare would be protected, using procedural triggers rather than direct legislative action.
I am asking you to take immediate action by supporting legislation that exempts Medicare from these PAYGO cuts. Seniors planned their retirements around the promise of Medicare coverage. They paid into this system throughout their working lives. They deserve better than to see their healthcare access reduced because of deficit increases they did not cause.
Will you commit to protecting Medicare by supporting an exemption from the automatic cuts triggered by H.R. 1? Our seniors are counting on you to keep the promise that their healthcare will remain secure.
