Oppose Administration Attacks on First Amendment Rights

To: Sen. Marshall, Rep. Davids, Sen. Moran

From: A constituent in Overland Park, KS

April 29

You need to speak out against the administration's escalating attacks on free speech. The FCC's challenge to ABC's broadcast licenses after President Trump demanded Jimmy Kimmel be fired is government retaliation against protected speech. The Justice Department's indictment of James Comey for posting seashells arranged to spell "86 47" on Instagram is an absurd overreach that criminalizes political expression. These aren't isolated incidents. Federal prosecutors sought indictments of six Democratic members of Congress for advising military members not to obey illegal orders. The administration has moved to deport legal immigrants who expressed support for Palestinians. Trump has filed lawsuits against media organizations over unfavorable coverage. This pattern contradicts Vice President Vance's February promise in Munich that this administration would champion free speech. The goal appears to be intimidation rather than conviction. Even when grand juries reject charges or courts strike down policies, the message to critics is clear: speak out and face harassment from federal prosecutors and regulators. This chills speech across the country. Defend the First Amendment. Condemn these actions publicly and use your oversight authority to investigate this abuse of federal power against political opponents and journalists.
