Explain - Why are American children starving?

To: Rep. Carter, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Leander, TX

February 19

One in five children across rural America is facing food insecurity. That is not an abstract statistic — it is a national failure unfolding in real time. Hungry children cannot learn, cannot grow, and cannot thrive. Their futures are being compromised by decisions made in Washington. Fully funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is not optional. It is a moral obligation. SNAP remains one of the most effective anti-hunger programs in the nation, helping more than 42 million Americans, including 16 million children, put food on the table. When benefits lapsed last November, families were pushed into crisis — driving miles to overcrowded food pantries, standing in long lines, and leaving with whatever limited supplies remained. No child should have to depend on chance and scarcity to eat. WIC provides essential nutrition, fresh fruits and vegetables, health screenings, and critical postpartum support to nearly 7 million pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, infants, and toddlers. These are foundational investments in child development, maternal health, and long-term public well-being. These programs are not handouts. They are lifelines. They are preventative care. They are the difference between stability and desperation for millions of families. Hunger is a policy choice. So is preventing it. Stop treating child nutrition as a bargaining chip. Stop forcing families to bear the cost of political dysfunction. Fully fund SNAP and WIC — without delay, without excuses, and without cuts. America’s children are watching. And they are waiting.
