June 29
I am writing as your constituent to demand immediate congressional action regarding a deeply alarming incident that strikes at the heart of our constitutional rights. On June 24, 2026, two agents from the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Professional Responsibility entered an active polling site in Syracuse, New York, where Paigelynne Gonyea was working as a poll worker during a primary election. The agents tracked her down over a five-month-old Instagram post in which she named ICE Agent Jonathan Ross as the officer who fatally shot Renee Good in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026 — information that had already been publicly reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune. Ms. Gonyea’s post called for Agent Ross to be indicted. The agents presented her with a form letter warning she may have violated federal law and demanded she delete the post. This is a blatant violation of the First Amendment. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) stated clearly: “A free America doesn’t dispatch federal law enforcement agents to intimidate someone for an Instagram post of publicly available information.” Further, New York State election law explicitly restricts who may enter a polling place. Onondaga County Commissioner Dustin Czarny confirmed there was “no role for law enforcement officials to be inside a polling place unless they are responding to an emergency.” I am demanding the following: 1. A formal congressional investigation into the use of DHS’s Office of Professional Responsibility to surveil and intimidate private citizens for protected political speech. 2. Immediate accountability for ICE Agent Jonathan Ross, who shot and killed Renee Good — a 37-year-old Minneapolis woman — and has since been placed in a new position with virtually no consequences after only three days of administrative leave. 3. Legislation protecting poll workers and election sites from unlawful federal intrusion. 4. A referral for the criminal indictment of Agent Jonathan Ross to the Department of Justice, independent of the FBI investigation that has been stalled under political pressure. The right to call for the indictment of a government agent — particularly one who killed a civilian in broad daylight — is core political speech protected by the First Amendment. When our government uses federal agents to silence that speech inside a polling place, we are no longer living in a free republic. I urge you to speak out publicly, open hearings, and use the full power of your office to hold those responsible accountable. Your constituents are watching.
