An Open Letter

To: Sen. Bennet, Rep. Neguse, Sen. Hickenlooper

From: A constituent in Boulder, CO

February 5

Congress MUST refuse to fund DHS and ICE as they currently are. Funding should resume only after both of these agencies are dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up. I want this to include enforceable limits, judicial oversight, transparent identification, lawful procedures, and true accountability. Congress cannot continue funding agencies that kill citizens in cold-blood, terrorize communities and ethnic groups, defy courts, disregard statutes, defy the Constitution, and deploy heavily-armed agents to kill law-abiding civilians without consequence. Short-term funding extensions and promises of incremental reform have done nothing to change ICE behavior — we need a drastic revamping if we want to save our democracy. We cannot allow these thugs to continue their lawlessness and to grow even more in numbers, and I want you to hold the line. Taking back all of the $75 billion from the Big Ugly Bill is a necessity, and giving them only a reasonable budget in which to operate. I don’t care how long the shut-down lasts, you have the American people behind you. We are looking for courage & strength, and I know you can do it.
