Protect and Increase NASA Science Funding, Reject Impoundment

To: Rep. Chu, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Pasadena, CA

October 11, 2025

I urge you to protect and increase NASA's science funding while rejecting any attempts at impoundment. The Trump administration's proposed 47% cut to NASA science programs is deeply concerning and counterproductive to our nation's scientific leadership and space exploration goals. Recently, Bill Nye, CEO of The Planetary Society and a prominent science advocate, joined 300 scientists on Capitol Hill to emphasize the critical importance of NASA's research programs. These programs are not only valuable in their own right but are also crucial for supporting future moon and Mars missions. Cutting this funding would severely hamper our ability to conduct meaningful space exploration and maintain our competitive edge in space technology. The United States is at risk of falling behind other nations, particularly China, in space exploration and leadership. This is not just about scientific prestige; it's about maintaining our technological capabilities, inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers, and ensuring our national security interests in space. While I appreciate that the House and Senate appropriations committees have initially rejected many of the proposed cuts, I implore you to follow through and finalize these protections. Furthermore, I ask that you consider increasing NASA's science funding to bolster our research capabilities and space exploration efforts. The inspirational value of NASA missions cannot be overstated. As Bill Nye emphasized, these missions capture the public's imagination and drive interest in STEM fields. By protecting and increasing NASA's science funding, we invest in our future, foster innovation, and maintain our position as a global leader in space exploration. I strongly urge you to reject any attempts at impoundment of NASA funds and to advocate for increased science funding in the final budget. Our nation's scientific progress, technological leadership, and ability to inspire future generations depend on your support for robust NASA funding.
