At this point, Senator Schmitt cannot hide behind a simple mistake. The basic facts were established in the hearing itself. Jack Smith was not at an Atlanta Hawks game in Atlanta. He was at an Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball game in College Park, Maryland. Senator Amy Klobuchar identified the problem immediately. Yet Senator Schmitt has continued defending his accusation after the hearing and has reportedly insisted, “There’s not a mistake.” That leaves an unacceptable choice. Either a United States senator and his staff were so profoundly unprepared that they publicly accused a witness of perjury without checking the difference between the Atlanta Hawks and the Iowa Hawkeyes — or, after learning that the accusation was false, Senator Schmitt chose to continue promoting it anyway. Neither possibility reflects conduct worthy of the United States Senate. I believe Senator Schmitt should resign. And I am profoundly grateful to Senator Amy Klobuchar for stopping that spectacle in its tracks and putting the actual facts into the record. She demonstrated exactly what oversight is supposed to look like: check the evidence, correct falsehoods, and insist that accusations this serious be grounded in reality.
