The PRESS Act is a bipartisan press shield law that would protect the confidentiality of journalists' sources, materials, and devices at the federal level, guarding against federal surveillance that has a chilling effect on reporting. With the 118th Congress ending soon, this may be the last chance to pass meaningful press freedom reform before Donald Trump takes office. Trump is unlikely to sign such a bill given his anti-press freedom stance, having attacked the media over 100 times and threatened to revoke broadcasters' licenses. Furthermore, he has promised the kind of government abuse against journalists that the PRESS Act would prevent. The Senate must act now to enshrine these vital protections for the journalism that our democracy depends on, as the House has already unanimously passed the bill.
