Stand up for press freedom and safety

To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla, Rep. Matsui

From: A constituent in Sacramento, CA

August 13

I am extremely concerned about journalist's safety around the world and in California. What are you doing to protect freedom of the press? Just last week on 8/8 journalists covering a protest at the Federal Detention Center in Los Angeles were beaten, injured, and detained for over an hour by LAPD. I would like you as my representative to begin an inquiry into this event, and hold officers accountable for violating court orders as well as California law protecting the press. Then this week an entire team of Al Jazeera journalists were killed in a targeted strike in Gaza. If Israel believes all of Al Jazeera as secretly Hamas, despite their dedicated hour-by-hour coverage of what's happening in Gaza, why don't they let in the foreign press? I demand that you speak out against this war crime and violation of international press freedom. These are just a few of the 200+ journalists killed by Israel, and these crimes cannot continue.
