I am writing as your constituent to demand urgent Congressional action regarding the conduct of President Trump in the ongoing conflict with Iran — specifically, his use of Truth Social to issue threats that legal scholars have characterized as potential war crimes, his failure to seek Congressional authorization for a war now in its 38th day, and the broader breakdown in lawful, accountable governance that this conflict represents. On Easter Sunday, April 5, President Trump posted a profanity-laden threat on Truth Social announcing "Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day" in Iran, explicitly threatening to destroy civilian power plants and bridges. He later confirmed at a press conference that his intent is to send Iran to the "stone ages." Legal scholars, including those quoted in mainstream reporting, have stated plainly: targeting civilian infrastructure — hospitals, schools, power grids — constitutes a war crime under international law. This is not a partisan legal opinion. It is a foundational principle of the laws of armed conflict that the United States helped establish after World War II. I want to be clear about what I am asking of you: 1. INVOKE WAR POWERS. The War Powers Resolution requires the President to seek Congressional authorization for sustained military conflict. This war has been ongoing since February 28. Congress has not authorized it. A war powers resolution is reportedly already being prepared — I urge you to support it, vote for it, and demand a floor vote immediately. 2. SPEAK ON THE RECORD. Republican lawmakers in Louisiana were asked directly about the Easter Sunday post and did not respond. Silence is a choice. Your constituents deserve to know where you stand on a president announcing military strategy via Truth Social in expletive-laden posts, and on whether targeting civilian power grids is acceptable U.S. policy. 3. INVESTIGATE THE ORIGINS. Reporting now confirms the administration armed Iranian opposition groups and worked to destabilize Iran's government while simultaneously conducting diplomatic negotiations with Iranian officials — weeks before the February 28 strikes. The American people deserve a full accounting of how we entered this war, who authorized what, and what the strategic objective actually is. 4. DEMAND A CEASEFIRE FRAMEWORK. Negotiations through Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey are ongoing. Congress should be actively engaged in supporting a diplomatic off-ramp, not standing on the sidelines while the President sets and extends unilateral bombing deadlines on social media. We do not govern from Truth Social. The decision to bomb a country's power grid — affecting hospitals, water systems, and millions of civilians — is not an 8 a.m. Easter Sunday post. It is a matter of law, of constitutional authority, and of our nation's moral standing in the world. I urge you to act with urgency. History will remember who spoke and who stayed silent.
