Trump Is Dismantling Anti-Corruption Law. Congress Must Stop the Bleeding Now.
To: Sen. Ernst, Rep. Nunn, Sen. Grassley
From: A verified voter in Des Moines, IA
April 12
I am your constituent, and I am demanding immediate action on a documented crisis that is destroying America’s reputation and rule of law.
I need you to do three things right now:
1. MAKE A PUBLIC STATEMENT — Name the Transparency International report on the floor of Congress or in a press conference. Demand that President Trump reinstate the DOJ’s KleptoCapture Task Force and restore full enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
2. CO-SPONSOR THE FCPA REINFORCEMENT ACT — Senators Warren, Whitehouse, Kim, Durbin, and Shaheen have already introduced legislation to strengthen anti-bribery enforcement. Support it. Champion it.
3. HOLD OVERSIGHT HEARINGS — Use your congressional authority to put Trump administration officials under oath and demand a public accounting of what they have dismantled.
Here is what has happened: The Trump Administration disbanded the DOJ’s KleptoCapture Task Force and Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, then paused enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act — a landmark anti-bribery law protecting Americans for nearly 50 years. The consequences are measurable. Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index gave the United States its worst score since 2012 — 28th in the world, tied with the Bahamas. Their CEO said publicly: “This declining trend might continue.”
This is not partisan spin. It is a verified international warning that our democratic institutions are being hollowed out.
Your constituents are watching. We vote. And we will remember whether you acted — or whether you stayed silent while corruption was normalized from the top down.
