Shut Down the GEO Group's North Lake Processing Center

To: Sen. Nesbitt, Gov. Whitmer, Rep. Andrews

From: A verified voter in Stevensville, MI

June 19

Shut down the North Lake Processing Center and end Michigan's relationship with GEO Group. Locking people up for profit is not a public safety strategy — it's a revenue model, and Michigan taxpayers shouldn't be funding it. GEO Group is a for-profit corporation that profits directly from keeping detention beds filled. That financial incentive has nothing to do with justice, rehabilitation, or community safety. Every dollar flowing to a private detention contractor is a dollar that could go toward public defenders, reentry programs, or community-based alternatives that actually work. I want you to take concrete action: cut the contracts, oppose any renewal or expansion of for-profit detention in this state, and push for legislation that bans private prison and immigration detention agreements in Michigan. This is a matter of basic accountability — public safety functions should never be outsourced to corporations chasing a profit margin.
