I am writing because New Mexicans need to you to stand up and publicly oppose the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act (BAAJA). This bill is not about affordability or jobs. It is about silencing the voices of New Mexicans, who have time and time again been forced to pay the consequences for dangerous and exploitative development projects. Nuclear fallout, uranium poisoning, dirty coal plants, and now hyperscale data centers that are targeting New Mexico because of our cheap land and lack of regulatory protections. Most egregiously, the bill threatens the sovereignty of our tribes and threatens their sacred sites throughout the nation. This year New Mexico faced an onslaught of climate disasters - extreme heat, drought, flooding, fire and even a tornado in Santa Fe! This is not the time to pass a compromise bill that will lock in fossil fuel development and data center proliferation. But multiple analysts have confirmed that the BAAJA will do just that. We just won the midterms in a landslide! Congress can negotiate something better. Something that will actually not only speed the permitting of renewable energy projects, but also ensure that we can transition away from fossil fuels. BAAJA will make it harder to stop fossil fuel projects for decades to come, long after the current administration is gone. You can do much better! And we need you to not only vote against the BAAJA, but have the courage to come out and demand better publicly. Senator Heinrich needs to hear from you because he is not listening to us.
