An Open Letter

Like most Americans, I do not support mass arrests of immigrants. ICE has shown that they cannot do their job without arresting US citizens, harassing kids, violating the sanctuary of churches and hospitals, killing Americans, or following the Constitution. It is disgusting that people have been arrested at their asylum hearings. Republicans ran on deporting the worst of the worst. I'd be delighted to see this actually be both the policy and practice as announced last week. But why are we spending $38 Billion to convert warehouses to detention centers if we are only going to target violent criminals? Please explain this policy and budget contradiction to voters and use our taxpayer dollars elsewhere. The second message also goes to CONGRESS. Trump asked the world for help on the war that he unilaterally (and unwisely) started. Unsurprisingly, every major ally said no. Countries are negotiating directly with Iran for oil - bypassing the US entirely. Trump first threatened NATO, then said he doesn't need them anyway. These alliances have held since 1945. The value of the dollar, trade deals, our military bases all depend on countries believing America is worth standing next to. You have allowed the arrogance and thin-skinned ego of one man and the unqualified people who work for him to destroy 80 years of trust and stability. Trump and the Republican party's legacy will be a weakened place and loss of standing in the world for America.
