Stop Loan Caps That Will Deepen the Healthcare Worker Shortage

To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff, Rep. McClintock

From: A constituent in El Dorado Hills, CA

May 22

Congress must step in to remove the proposed federal student loan caps and stop the dismantling of the Department of Education before this crisis gets worse. We already have a severe healthcare worker shortage in this country, and cutting off access to student loans for the people training to fill those gaps is exactly the wrong move. Healthcare careers require years of expensive education. Students don't choose nursing, medicine, or allied health because it's cheap — they take on debt because there's no other way to get there. Capping loans doesn't make education more affordable; it makes it inaccessible. The Department of Education should be lowering barriers to these careers, not erecting new ones. This administration is actively working to gut the very agency responsible for keeping that access open. Congress has both the authority and the obligation to intervene. Remove these caps and protect the Department of Education before the healthcare workforce shortage becomes a full-blown crisis.
