Oppose Alabama's exclusionary "What is a Woman" Act

To: Sen. Hovey, Rep. Gray, Gov. Ivey

HB 405, the "What is a Woman" Act, seeks to establish narrow and exclusionary legal definitions of gender based solely on biological characteristics present at birth. This legislation would codify discrimination against transgender individuals by denying their fundamental rights and preventing them from living authentically. Such rigid definitions fail to account for the complex realities of gender identity and expression. Transgender women are women, and transgender men are men - their identities are valid and deserving of respect. This bill promotes harmful stereotypes and undermines the dignity of Alabama's transgender community. I urge you to oppose HB 405 and instead champion policies that uplift and protect the rights of all Alabamians, regardless of gender identity or expression. Transgender lives are valuable, and legislating against this vulnerable population perpetuates stigma, marginalization, and injustice.
