Vote NO on H.R. 1 — Don’t Trade Medicaid for Border Theater
To: Rep. Casten
From: A constituent in Glen Ellyn, IL
July 2
I am writing to express my strong opposition to H.R. 1, the “Our Big, Beautiful Border Act”, and to urge you to vote NO on this deeply misguided bill.
Not only is this legislation rooted in fear and political theater rather than sound immigration policy, it comes at an unconscionable cost: slashing critical programs like Medicaid, food assistance, and housing support that millions of Americans — including families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities — rely on to survive.
Let’s be clear: this bill proposes to fund an over-militarized and inhumane border agenda by gutting the very social safety net that supports our most vulnerable neighbors. That is not responsible governance — it is cruelty dressed up as fiscal policy.
These cuts will not only hurt individuals — they will ripple across communities, increasing poverty, worsening health outcomes, and straining already underfunded services. We cannot afford to trade compassion for cruelty. We should be investing in people, not punishing them.
I am deeply disappointed to see this bill prioritized as H.R. 1 — as if it represents the most pressing need of the American people. It does not. What we need are policies that uplift, not divide. That build, not tear down.
I urge you to reject this bill and any future attempts to sacrifice social programs on the altar of political showmanship. I will be watching your vote and holding you accountable
