Block the $1.7 Billion IRS Settlement Slush Fund

To: Sen. Murray, Sen. Cantwell, Rep. DelBene

May 15

Demand a GAO investigation into the proposed $1.7 billion Judgment Fund settlement between the DOJ and Trump, and support legislation blocking January 6 defendants from receiving taxpayer payouts through it. This deal is structured corruption, and Congress needs to act before it closes. Trump filed a $10 billion lawsuit against his own IRS on January 29, 2026 — a case legal experts say was dead before it was filed. The statute of limitations had already run, the damages theory had been rejected by federal courts, and a federal judge in Miami sua sponte stayed the case and ordered standing briefings because Trump controls both sides of the litigation. Two weeks before that May 27 hearing, the DOJ — now led by Todd Blanche, Trump's own former criminal defense attorney — is moving to settle for $1.7 billion in taxpayer money. The five-member commission controlling that fund serves at Trump's pleasure, with no disclosure requirements and no restrictions on payments to Trump-affiliated entities. This isn't a settlement. It's a transfer of public funds to a slush fund with no accountability. The GAO must investigate how the Judgment Fund is being used, commission members and recipients must be publicly disclosed, and Congress must pass legislation ensuring pardoned January 6 defendants cannot collect taxpayer dollars through this scheme.
