Hold Big Pharma Accountable for High Drug Prices Big Pharma’s anti-competitive tactics and egregious pricing practices are the root cause of out-of-control drug prices in America. As a constituent, I encourage you to lower prescription drug prices by holding Big Pharma accountable for gaming the system to block competition from more affordable alternatives to high-priced brand name drugs, and repeatedly hiking prices. Big Pharma’s egregious abuse of the patent system allows brand name drug makers to extend monopolies on their blockbuster products, continue hiking prices and block competition from more affordable alternatives for American patients. Brand name manufacturers' effectiveness in delaying competition has also emboldened Big Pharma to set increasingly outrageous launch prices for new products coming to market. The pharmaceutical industry points a finger at everyone else while continuing to engage in these practices that are driving health care inflation, costing American consumers, taxpayers and the U.S. health care system billions of dollars, and causing as many as one-in-two Americans to experience financial hardship affording their prescription drugs. Meanwhile, Big Pharma routinely pushes a false narrative that research and development costs justify out-of-control drug prices, despite evidence showing that pharmaceutical companies spend more on priorities like marketing and advertising than on investments in true innovation. Please stand with American patients like me and work with your colleagues in Congress to hold Big Pharma accountable for high prescription drug prices – including by cracking down on patent abuse and fostering greater competition in the market to lower drug prices for patients.
