Today marks 26 years since the Columbine High School shooting—an unthinkable tragedy that should have been a turning point in our nation’s history. Yet here we are, more than two decades later, with gun violence not only continuing, but spiraling further out of control. Our children are growing up with active shooter drills instead of a sense of safety. Communities live in fear of the next mass shooting. And Congress has yet to take the kind of decisive action this crisis demands.
I am urging you, as a concerned constituent, to take a stand. We need comprehensive, common sense gun laws—not tomorrow, not when it’s politically convenient, but now.
Specifically, I ask that you support or introduce legislation that includes the following measures: • Red Flag Laws that allow for the temporary removal of firearms from individuals deemed a risk to themselves or others.
• Mandatory Safe and Secure Firearm Storage, regardless of whether children are present in the home, to prevent accidental shootings and unauthorized access.
• Universal Background Checks to close dangerous loopholes in private and gun show sales.
• Higher Minimum Age Requirements (21+) for purchasing firearms—particularly semi-automatic rifles and handguns—to align with existing handgun laws, reduce impulsive acts of violence, and reflect evidence showing increased risk in the 18–20 age group.
• Limits on High-Capacity Magazines and Assault-Style Weapons, which have no place in civilian hands.
• Mandatory Waiting Periods for firearm purchases to help prevent impulsive acts of violence or suicide. Gun violence is a preventable epidemic. The majority of Americans support stronger gun safety laws. This should not be a partisan issue—it is a matter of public safety and moral responsibility.
Please, honor the memory of Columbine and the countless lives lost since by taking meaningful action. Our children and communities deserve better.
