An Open Letter
To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla, Rep. Calvert
From: A verified voter in La Quinta, CA
April 16
I am writing as a concerned constituent from La Quinta, CA, to urge Congress to exercise its oversight authority and take immediate steps to pause or more thoroughly review the pace and scope of major changes being made to historic federal properties and public spaces in Washington, D.C., especially those affecting the visual, historical, and cultural character of the nation's capital, including areas near the Capitol grounds and National Mall. Washington, D.C., belongs to all Americans as a shared symbol of our democracy, not a canvas for rapid, executive-driven transformations. Recent projects—including the demolition and replacement of the White House East Wing with a large new ballroom, paving over the Rose Garden, proposals for a massive triumphal arch, potential statue gardens or monuments on parkland, and other aesthetic or structural changes—seem to be progressing quickly through executive actions, private funding, or limited approvals. While some intend to improve security, capacity, or commemoration (such as for the nation's 250th anniversary), the speed and scale risk undermining historic preservation laws, public input processes, and the careful, bipartisan stewardship that has long shaped our capital. Congress holds key oversight responsibilities for federal lands, historic sites, and appropriations in the District. I respectfully ask that you: - Hold hearings to evaluate the full impact of these projects on D.C.'s historic fabric, public access, environmental considerations, and taxpayer costs (even where private funding is involved). - Ensure adherence to review processes under agencies like the National Capital Planning Commission, Commission of Fine Arts, and historic preservation laws. - Consider legislation to require clear congressional approval for major changes to key federal monuments, parks, or executive properties that define the national capital's identity. - Focus on protecting the dignity and accessibility of spaces around the U.S. Capitol, National Mall, and the Potomac River for future generations. Our capital should reflect lasting American values through thoughtful evolution, not hasty overhauls that could set dangerous precedents for politicized redesigns. I urge your leadership to slow unchecked changes and promote transparent, inclusive decision-making. Thank you for your service and your attention to this issue. I look forward to your response and to any actions you plan to take.
