Halt Operation Southern Spear: Protect Human Rights and International Law

To: Sen. Coons, Sen. Blunt Rochester, Rep. McBride

From: A constituent in Claymont, DE

November 17

I'm writing to express urgent concern about Operation Southern Spear, led by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The deployment of 15,000 U.S. military personnel, including the USS Gerald R. Ford, has led to the destruction of at least 20 boats and 80 deaths in just two months. This operation echoes historical "gunboat diplomacy" and has been characterized as extrajudicial executions, violating international law. Disturbingly, the Pentagon admits to not knowing the identities of those killed. I urge you to take immediate action to halt Operation Southern Spear and call for a congressional investigation. We need a thorough review of its legality, effectiveness, and alignment with our values and international obligations. We must ensure that our foreign policy upholds human rights, respects international law, and serves the interests of both Americans and our global neighbors. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated – lives are at stake, and our nation's integrity on the world stage hangs in the balance.
