I am writing to express my strong opposition to any efforts to criminalize or further restrict the use of THC in Texas. Banning THC would not only harm thousands of Texans who rely on it for legitimate medical relief, but it would also hinder our state’s economic potential.
THC, the active compound in cannabis, has been proven to offer substantial health benefits. It is used to alleviate chronic pain, reduce symptoms of PTSD and anxiety, manage chemotherapy-related nausea, and improve the quality of life for individuals suffering from epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and other serious conditions. For many patients, THC is a safer alternative to opioids and other pharmaceuticals with harmful side effects or addiction risks.
Beyond its medical value, legal THC has the potential to generate significant revenue for Texas. Other states that have legalized cannabis for medical and recreational use have seen billions of dollars in tax income, job creation, and a boost to local businesses. Texas has the opportunity to lead in this growing industry, rather than fall behind due to outdated policies.
Moreover, criminalizing THC disproportionately affects communities of color and clogs our criminal justice system with nonviolent offenders. These resources would be better used addressing real threats to public safety.
Texans deserve access to safe, regulated medical options and the economic benefits that legalization can provide. I urge you to consider the science, the economics, and the will of the people who increasingly support reform. Please do not support legislation that would further criminalize THC. Instead, let's work toward a compassionate, responsible, and economically sound cannabis policy in Texas.
