Investigate Senator Corderman's Data Center Votes and Donor Ties

To: Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks, Rep. Elfreth

From: A verified voter in Arnold, MD

October 22

Investigate Senator Paul Corderman's record of supporting data center tax breaks and regulatory rollbacks while accepting campaign contributions from the industries that benefit. Since 2020, he has voted for sales and use tax exemptions for data center equipment, co-sponsored legislation to strip the Public Service Commission's approval authority over backup generators, and pursued a ten-year tax exemption at Mount Aetna. His donors include Amazon, FirstEnergy, NiSource, and lobbying firms whose current clients are actively developing data centers in Washington and Frederick counties. The pattern goes beyond policy disagreement. When Aligned Data Centers failed to win commission approval for 168 diesel generators at its Frederick County campus, Corderman helped pass SB 474 to change the law governing that exact approval. NiSource, which contributed $2,750 to his campaign, is pursuing data center gas contracts and lobbied for legislation that consumer advocates warned would shift those costs onto ordinary utility customers. In April 2026, Corderman voted against the Utility RELIEF Act, which would have required data centers to cover the infrastructure costs they create rather than pass them to households. Residents in Washington and Frederick counties are being asked to surrender tax revenue, absorb utility infrastructure costs, and live with the environmental footprint of these projects. Corderman owes a full public accounting of every vote, every donor, and every concession he has supported for this industry.
