It is (past) time that Illinois join the growing number of states and countries that bans child marriage. There is no moral, economic, or legal reason for child marriage to exist. The only purpose is to shame pregnant teenagers or to trap a young girl into marriage. If a person is not old enough to sign a contract for themselves (marriage certificate or divorce papers), to join the military, or to vote, they are not old enough to marry. Please start drafting legislation for Illinois to ban child marriage in its next session.
