I need you to investigate the torture conditions at North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin and take immediate action to shut it down. Torture is illegal in Michigan under state law and violates the Eighth Amendment. Sleep deprivation is torture. Lights are only off from midnight to 5:00 am, and guards shine flashlights and blast radios even during those hours.
Hundreds of men are on hunger strike right now because conditions are so severe. They're being denied adequate food, medical care consists of nothing but ibuprofen regardless of symptoms, and many have been held over 120 days without information about their cases. In December, Nenko Stanev Gantchev died at this facility after reportedly being denied necessary medical care.
Women detained there describe being abducted by men in plainclothes and separated from their children. Some are domestic violence survivors who may qualify for protection under the Violence Against Women Act. One pregnant woman has no way to confirm her pregnancy or receive proper prenatal care.
This facility reopened in June 2025 after being closed by the previous administration. Michigan should not be complicit in systematic human rights violations. Launch an investigation and use every tool available to close North Lake immediately.
