Concern About Government Overreach

To: Rep. Burlison

April 14

I am writing in response to your recent statement: “Now more than ever, we must stand firm against the overreach of Washington bureaucrats. I will fight tirelessly to uphold the principles that make our nation great.” I share your concern about government overreach and the importance of upholding our nation’s principles. In light of this, I would like to bring to your attention several actions taken during President Trump’s second term that have raised significant concerns regarding executive overreach: 1. Mass Dismissal of Inspectors General: In January 2025, President Trump abruptly fired at least 17 inspectors general across various federal agencies without providing the legally required 30-day notice to Congress. This move was widely criticized as undermining governmental oversight and accountability. 2. Erosion of Due Process in Immigration Enforcement: The administration implemented aggressive immigration policies that reportedly included detaining immigrants without notice, targeting individuals for their political speech, and deporting them to foreign prisons, sometimes in defiance of judicial orders. Alarmingly, there were discussions within the administration about the possibility of deporting American citizens, raising serious legal and ethical concerns. 3. Expansion of Executive Power via Emergency Appeals: President Trump’s administration frequently bypassed traditional legislative processes by inundating the Supreme Court with emergency appeals to advance its policy agenda. This approach strained the Court’s capacity for thorough judicial review and raised concerns about the balance of power between the executive and judicial branches. 4. Redefinition of Fraud Enforcement and Deregulation: The administration significantly weakened government oversight by defunding the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, halting enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and issuing numerous pardons for individuals convicted of white-collar crimes. These actions sparked concerns among ethics watchdogs about the erosion of accountability in financial regulations. 5. Dismissal of Inspectors General Without Proper Notice: The mass firing of inspectors general without the legally mandated notice to Congress was seen as a direct threat to the checks and balances that are fundamental to our democracy. Legal experts and bipartisan members of Congress expressed alarm over this unprecedented move. These instances highlight the importance of vigilance in preserving the constitutional balance of powers and ensuring that no branch of government exceeds its authority. I urge you to consider these actions critically and to advocate for measures that reinforce transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law. Thank you for your commitment to upholding the principles that make our nation great. Bring home Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia
