I am writing to express my deep concern regarding recent discussions about potential attempts to circumvent the constitutional two-term limit for U.S. presidents. As reported by NBC News, President Donald Trump has suggested that “there are methods” to seek a third term in office, despite the clear restrictions set forth by the 22nd Amendment.
The 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution explicitly limits individuals to being elected to the presidency no more than twice. This amendment was ratified to prevent any single individual from holding excessive power and to maintain the democratic principles upon which our nation was founded.
Recent reports indicate that some allies of President Trump are exploring avenues to amend or reinterpret this amendment to allow for a third term. For instance, Representative Andy Ogles has introduced a resolution proposing a constitutional amendment that would permit a president to serve a third term, specifically tailored to enable President Trump to run again.
Such efforts are deeply troubling and pose a significant threat to the democratic foundations of our republic. The United States is not a nation of kings or dictators; the peaceful transition of power and adherence to constitutional term limits are cornerstones of our democracy.
I urge you to take all necessary actions to uphold the integrity of our Constitution and ensure that the presidential two-term limit remains inviolable. It is imperative that we prevent any attempts to undermine this fundamental principle, which could set a dangerous precedent and lead our country toward authoritarianism.
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I trust that you will represent the interests of your constituents by safeguarding our democratic institutions.
