Oppose Partisan Redistricting

To: Sen. Kolkhorst, Rep. Metcalf

From: A verified voter in Montgomery, TX

August 15

I am writing today as a concerned citizen in Montgomery County asking you to oppose the redistricting effort currently under consideration in the special legislative session. There are far more important issues for you, my elected representative, to address. Undermining public trust by baldly abusing power for political gain is unacceptable. While I would prefer that your energy and effort be directed to more pressing matters such as fixing the skyrocketing cost of healthcare, the chronic under-resourcing of public education, or our shaky energy grid, if you feel you must pursue an out-of-cycle redistricting effort, here are some principles I hope you would advocate for: Transparency and Public Input: Require evidence-based arguments that are clearly in the best interest of all Texans. Provide opportunities for public hearings and input, allowing communities to express their concerns about district boundaries. Fairness and Equality: Create compact and contiguous districts, avoiding splitting communities or diluting the voting power of specific groups. Independent Review: Support independent commissions or other mechanisms that minimize partisan influence and ensure a more impartial approach. The lamentably partisan plan currently under consideration will only add to the political turmoil and rancor we are experiencing. Instead, you have the opportunity to “be the change you want to see“ and insist on truly representing the interest of your constituents, and not a corrupt administration’s whims. Thank you for your consideration!
