I am writing to urge you to stand firm in defense of the U.S. Constitution and the settled legal precedents of our nation. As the Supreme Court nears a decision in Trump v. Barbara, it is imperative that Congress remains a check on executive overreach and resists any attempt to fundamentally alter American citizenship laws through the SAVE Act or similar legislation.
It is clear that the SAVE Act is not just a voting bill; it is a citizenship verification bill disguised as election security. By creating administrative hurdles that target the 14th Amendment’s guarantees, this legislation seeks to accomplish through bureaucracy what the Constitution explicitly forbids. We cannot allow the fundamental right of citizenship to be undermined by deceptive legislative maneuvers.
Birthright citizenship has been the bedrock of our national identity since the ratification of the 14th Amendment and was reaffirmed by the Supreme Court in 1898. Any attempt to bypass the Supreme Law of the Land via executive order or legislative riders sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the stability of our democracy and the rights of every American family.
Specifically, I ask that you:
- Oppose the SAVE Act: Reject any legislation that creates an unconstitutional documentation hurdle for citizenship or nationalizes our election system.
- Protect the Power of the Purse: Ensure that no federal funds are used to implement or enforce Executive Order 14160, which attempts to unilaterally redefine "jurisdiction" at birth.
- Maintain Senate Rules: Oppose any nuclear option or rules changes that would allow for the passage of radical changes without a broad, bipartisan consensus.
Whether you are a defender of civil rights or a proponent of limited government, we can all agree that the Executive Branch does not have the power to rewrite the Constitution. Please prioritize the Rule of Law over partisan mandates.
