Prevent government doxxing of private citizens
To: Sen. Moran, Sen. Marshall, Rep. Estes
From: A constituent in Wichita, KS
April 24
I am writing with deep concern regarding the recent doxxing of Jennifer Vasquez Sura and her children. As reported by The Washington Post and The New Republic, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared on X a 2021 order of protection petition filed and subsequently abandoned by Ms. Vasquez Sura. Shockingly, this post included her family's address, forcing her and her children to be moved to a safe house by supporters out of fear for their safety. Ms. Vasquez Sura's own words underscore the gravity of this situation: "I don't feel safe when the government posts my address, the house where my family lives, for everyone to see, especially when this case has gone viral and people have all sorts of opinions," she stated. "So, this is definitely a bit terrifying. I'm scared for my kids." This incident is not an isolated occurrence in the digital age, but the alleged involvement of government entities in exposing a private citizen's personal information elevates the threat to an unacceptable level. The potential for harassment, stalking, and even violence increases exponentially when such sensitive data is publicly disseminated, especially in a climate of heightened political polarization. The fact that a DHS spokesperson reportedly did not respond to requests for comment about not redacting the family's address further exacerbates the sense of alarm. The silence from official channels suggests a disregard for the safety and well-being of private citizens. As MSNBC contributor Rotimi Adeoye aptly stated, "The Trump administration doxxed an American citizen, endangering her and her children. This is completely unacceptable and flat-out wrong." This sentiment is echoed by many, including Dean Preston, who highlighted the terror this action inflicts on the family. It is imperative that Congress take immediate and decisive action to prevent future incidents of government-sanctioned doxxing. We must establish clear guidelines and safeguards to ensure that the personal information of private citizens, particularly vulnerable individuals and their families, is protected from reckless or politically motivated disclosure by government entities. I urge you to champion legislation that: * Establishes strict protocols for redacting sensitive personal information, such as addresses, in all government communications and publications. * Implements severe penalties for government officials or agencies that engage in the doxxing of private citizens. * Creates mechanisms for accountability and redress for individuals harmed by such actions. The safety and security of all Americans should be paramount. The doxxing of Ms. Vasquez Sura and her children represents a dangerous erosion of this principle. I implore you to act swiftly to ensure that such egregious violations of privacy and safety are never repeated. Thank you for your time and attention to this critical matter.
