Formal Opposition to the Nomination of Markwayne Mullin for Secretary of DHS

To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted, Rep. Beatty

From: A verified voter in Columbus, OH

March 19

As one of your constituents, I am writing to formally urge you to vote NO on the confirmation of Markwayne Mullin as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. While the nominee has been characterized by some as having "good character" or a "fighter’s spirit," the DHS is a sprawling agency of 260,000 employees that requires a strategist and a diplomat, not a tactical fighter. My opposition is based on the following critical concerns: - Lack of Executive Scale: Managing a small plumbing business and serving on House subcommittees does not equate to the strategic oversight required for a $100 billion federal agency. A lack of experience in large-scale organizational leadership makes a nominee prone to "rookie mistakes" that the nation cannot afford in its primary security department. - Tactical vs. Strategic Leadership: While Mr. Mullin’s actions on January 6th demonstrated tactical courage, the role of DHS Secretary requires the strategic capability to anticipate and prevent crises through complex inter-agency coordination—skills not evidenced in his professional record. - Deficit in Diplomacy: A successful DHS Secretary must navigate high-stakes negotiations with foreign leaders and hostile domestic jurisdictions. Mr. Mullin’s refusal to de-escalate his personal feud with Senator Rand Paul during his hearing demonstrates a prioritized interest in personal grievances over the diplomatic temperament necessary for this cabinet position. - Temperament Concerns: The DHS requires a leader with a "cool head" to manage the Secret Service, FEMA, and border operations. Mr. Mullin’s history of combative public behavior suggests a volatility that is fundamentally at odds with the stability required for the nation’s safety. The Department of Homeland Security is too vital to be a training ground for an under-experienced administrator. I ask that you insist on a nominee with a proven track record of managing massive bureaucracies and a demonstrated ability to exercise diplomatic restraint.
