I am writing to express my strong opposition to H.R. 899, which seeks to abolish the Department of Education. This proposal would have devastating consequences for students, educators, and the future of our nation’s education system.
The Department of Education plays a critical role in ensuring equal access to education, enforcing federal education laws, and providing essential funding to schools. Eliminating it would:
1. Harm Vulnerable Students – The Department enforces laws that protect students from discrimination, ensuring all children—regardless of race, disability, or income—receive a quality education. Without it, protections could be weakened, leading to increased inequities.
2. Jeopardize Federal Funding – Many schools, particularly in low-income and rural areas, depend on federal funding to operate. Without the Department, critical funding for teacher salaries, school improvements, and student resources could be at risk.
3. Undermine National Education Standards – The Department helps establish guidelines that ensure students nationwide receive a strong education. Without it, states could implement drastically different standards, leaving students unprepared for college and careers.
4. Threaten Special Education Services – The Department enforces the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ensuring students with disabilities receive the support they need. Its elimination could put these essential protections in jeopardy.
Education is the foundation of our nation’s success, and dismantling the agency responsible for oversight would be a serious mistake. Instead of eliminating the Department of Education, I urge you to work on strengthening and improving it to better serve students, teachers, and communities.
I strongly urge you to oppose H.R. 899 and stand in defense of a strong, equitable, and well-funded education system. Please let me know where you stand on this critical issue.
