Oppose the SAVE Act – Protect Voting Rights and Prevent Unnecessary Barriers
To: Sen. Banks, Rep. Messmer, Sen. Young
From: A constituent in Mount Vernon, IN
April 9
I am writing to urge you to oppose the SAVE Act, which proposes additional federal requirements for voter eligibility verification. While I support the integrity of our elections, this legislation would create unnecessary barriers to the democratic process, particularly for eligible American voters.
The SAVE Act:
•Targets a problem that doesn’t exist. There is no evidence of widespread noncitizen voting in federal elections. Existing laws already prevent ineligible individuals from voting and prosecute violations.
•Creates burdensome documentation requirements. Requiring documentary proof of citizenship could disenfranchise eligible voters, especially seniors, naturalized citizens, rural residents, and low-income individuals who may not have immediate access to such documents.
•Makes it more difficult for women who are married and changed their names, which does not match their birth certificate. Women’s suffrage gave women the right to vote.
•Undermines states’ rights. States already manage voter registration effectively and securely. This federal overreach would disrupt state-level systems that are functioning well.
Instead of focusing on restrictive measures, Congress should prioritize legislation that expands access, improves voting infrastructure, and strengthens voter confidence without alienating eligible citizens.
I respectfully ask you to stand up for voting rights and democracy by opposing the SAVE Act and any effort that restricts access without just cause.
