I am writing to urge immediate congressional action in response to President Trump's recent letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre regarding Greenland. This correspondence, forwarded by the White House National Security Council to ambassadors in Washington, demonstrates a dangerous departure from reality that threatens our national security and international standing.
In the letter, Trump justifies threatening to seize Greenland by claiming Norway denied him the Nobel Peace Prize for allegedly stopping "8 Wars PLUS." He states he will no longer "think purely of Peace" but instead focus on what is "good and proper for the United States of America." He questions Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland, falsely claiming no written documents establish their ownership, and concludes that "The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland."
These claims are factually incorrect. Greenland has been Danish territory for centuries, with residents who are Danish citizens voting in Danish elections. Multiple written documents, including some signed by the United States, establish Danish sovereignty. Trump did not end eight wars. The Norwegian government does not award the Nobel Peace Prize; an independent committee does. He appears to conflate Norway with Denmark in his grievances.
This letter uses a personal fixation on an award as justification for threatening military action against NATO allies. Denmark is a founding member of NATO, an alliance created by the United States that has only ever been invoked in defense of American interests. Threatening to invade the territory of an ally damages our credibility, emboldens adversaries like Russia and China, and undermines the security architecture that has protected American interests for 75 years.
The damage to our international reputation will persist long after this administration ends. I urge you to exercise congressional oversight powers immediately to address this conduct and prevent further deterioration of our alliances.
