An Open Letter

To: Sen. Ernst, Rep. Nunn, Sen. Grassley

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

June 21

I’m writing to say that I’m disgusted and infuriated by ICE’s attacks on our immigrant community—especially in Los Angeles. Neighborhoods are being terrorized and families separated. How is this good for anyone? YOU are a child of immigration. We are all immigrants except for Native Americans. Aside from the fact that it’s cruel and un-American, it’s going to cost us. Immigrants are the backbone of our economy. Entire industries depend on them. Almost all of these people are law-abiding, work and pay taxes. Many of them have been here for decades and have kids who are citizens. It’s inhumane to deport them and the economic consequences will be dire. Congress needs to step in and make this stop! Also, I oppose the Republican budget bill. It’s terrible. I hate the attacks on public lands, the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, and the cuts to clean energy tax credits—which create jobs! But honestly there isn’t a single part of it that isn’t awful. Republicans should be ashamed of it. It takes money away from poor people and gives it to the rich and blows up the deficit in the process. Congress must vote no.
