Saudi Crown Prince Remarks
To: Sen. Moreno, Sen. Husted
From: A constituent in Columbus, OH
November 19
senate write write senate I am writing to express my profound outrage at Donald Trump’s decision to host Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House as if he is a world-renowned hero. This man has been viewed by world leaders as an outcast and pariah following the horrific murder of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. When pressed about the brutal killing of Khashoggi, Trump’s made the reprehensible remark, “things happen,” in defense of his guest. Senator, it is long past time for you to begin to put yourself in the shoes of the people Trump continues to attack. Imagine if it had been your family member who was viciously murdered; how would you feel hearing this flippant comment from the leader of the free world? This is not an offhand comment. It is a shocking abandonment of moral responsibility. When a president casually dismisses an extrajudicial killing committed by an authoritarian regime, he effectively signals to the world that the United States is willing to look the other way when journalists are silenced through violence. Such a stance directly undermines American credibility, weakens our standing on human rights, and emboldens leaders who believe they can act with impunity. Equally disturbing is the Trump family’s extensive history of business interests in Saudi Arabia. Trump’s relationship with the country raises unavoidable concerns about conflicts of interest. When a political figure expresses public leniency toward a regime that he has financially benefited from, it casts a long shadow over his motives. It suggests that private profit overrides the most basic principles of justice, human dignity, and democratic accountability. This is unacceptable in any political leader, let alone the president. I urge you, as my elected representative, to condemn this behavior forcefully and publicly. Your constituents need to know that their senator will stand unequivocally for human rights, accountability, and the protection of journalists—not for those who excuse or minimize brutality for political or financial convenience. This is NOT a partisan matter. I will ask again, as I have in past letters, how you feel about your grandchildren and their future children reading about your support of this president and his pursuits in the history books. Will that make them proud? I look forward to hearing what concrete actions you will take in response to this deeply troubling situation.
