I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the nomination of Andrea Lucas to serve a second term as a commissioner at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. As you know, the EEOC plays a critical role in combating workplace discrimination and enforcing anti-discrimination laws.
Unfortunately, Lucas’s tenure as Acting Chair has raised significant alarms. During her first few months in this role, Acting Chair Lucas has consistently used the EEOC to harm the very individuals the EEOC is meant to protect.
Most recently, Ms. Lucas has halted enforcement of workplace civil rights laws on behalf of transgender workers and wrongly cast doubt on the legality of diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. She has clearly laid out her priorities for the agency, which include singling out transgender workers for mistreatment and weaponizing civil rights law to eliminate practices that foster inclusive work environments and remove barriers to employment opportunity. If she is confirmed to a second term as an EEOC commissioner, her agenda will make it easier for employers to discriminate against workers without consequences and harder for workers to have a fair shot to get hired and advance at work free from discrimination.
Given these troubling developments, I demand you OPPOSE Andrea Lucas’s nomination to serve a second term as an EEOC commissioner. It is imperative that we have a leader who champions the rights of all workers, rather than one who compromises those rights.
