I have just accompanied a friend to her check in at the ICE office in Stockton California. It’s 104 degrees there today. There is an entry hall and a window behind which a rather unfriendly person. There are no chairs, no bathroom facilities and people are expected to wait outside the building. My friend works hard to support her family and is also a committed community worker who has been here for 23 years. She has children and grandchildren. One of her children is cognitively disabled. Why we would want to deport her is completely beyond my imagination. But that she should be treated so disrespectfully by a government entity which requires her presence is just another demonstration of an appalling un-American racist attitude to people who contribute enormously to our economy and our community.
