Trump’s tariffs are nonsensical. Tariffs are generally placed on products not nations but he used an arbitrary formula that makes no sense and some economists think might have been made by asking AI how to impose tariffs. It is clear though that he computed the raids without using tariff data. It is like he is doing economics like creationism to biology or astrology for astronomy. He did put a crackpot anti vaccine grifter in charge of public health so this is par for the course with the balderdash clown show that is his administration. Stocks experienced the biggest fall since the pandemic because of the tariffs. There is no thought once so ever about if it is even possible to bring back manufacturing. In fact two manufacturing companies Whirlpool and Stellantis announced layoffs because of the tariffs. It takes a minimum a 5 years even if investors wanted to build a plant. Consumers don’t want to pay the costs of products manufactured in the US and you can’t unring a bell. Trump is far too unpredictable anyway. Even if a company wanted to invest in manufacturing there is n ok way to predict future costs when the president does actions on a whim. We already had low unemployment and a strong economy and were the nation with the second highest per capita manufacturing. The manufacturing that left will not come back. Trumps tariffs are essentially sanctions on the rest of the world. He is trying to use the power of the US economy that force other countries to do as the US wants. This is not even viewed as Eric Trump posted that I would not want to be the last country to negotiate a trade deal with Trump. Trump is overturning 80 years of trade cooperation since World War II ended to concentrate power in his own hands. Taking down the disastrous tariffs that made the depression worse has fostered international cooperation and created the rising prosperity of our century. Weakening the US and its allies benefits Russia by increasing their power relative to other countries according to authoritarianism expert Timothy Snyder. His tariffs are a tool to further undermine our democracy. It is a means to compel loyalty to Trump from companies. As members of Congress you could assert your constitutional power to manage tariffs to stop this disaster. Please do so. Stop cowing to Trump and complying in advance.
