WHO’S NEXT? JAIL WITHOUT DUE PROCESS—STOP TRUMP’S UNCONSTITUTIONAL POWER GRAB

To: Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz, Rep. Moran

From: A constituent in Kilgore, TX

March 17

I am writing to express deep concern over President Trump’s invocation of the ALIEN ENEMIES ACT to detain and deport accused members of TREN DE ARAGUA (TDA), DISREGARDING CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTIONS AND JUDICIAL RULINGS. Even more alarming, reports indicate that those targeted are being sent to SAN SALVADOR’S BRUTAL PRISONS—a blatant violation of due process and human rights. This sweeping order makes it DANGEROUSLY EASY TO BE ACCUSED AND PUNISHED. SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS GIVING A RIDE TO AN ALLEGED TDA MEMBER COULD LEAD TO INDEFINITE DETENTION, ASSET SEIZURE, AND DEPORTATION. There is no clear process to prove innocence, and no guarantee of a fair trial. This sets a chilling precedent where SUSPICION ALONE CAN STRIP SOMEONE OF THEIR RIGHTS. TODAY, IT’S UNDOCUMENTED VENEZUELANS. TOMORROW, COULD IT BE POLITICAL OPPONENTS, JOURNALISTS, OR ACTIVISTS? Congress must act immediately to stop this unconstitutional power grab. We cannot allow a president to ignore the courts and weaponize laws against those he dislikes. I urge you to condemn this abuse of power and take legislative action to prevent further violations of civil liberties.
