The Trump administration's proposal to send more deported migrants to the notorious Cecot prison in El Salvador raises grave human rights concerns. This sprawling facility, the largest in the Americas, has been widely criticized for its harsh conditions and lack of due process protections. Sending people there without adequate legal safeguards risks subjecting them to mistreatment and violating their fundamental rights. Furthermore, the reported proposal from private security contractor Erik Prince to establish a U.S.-run migrant detention facility in El Salvador seems legally dubious and rife with potential human rights abuses. Outsourcing immigration detention to a third country with lax oversight could enable unchecked violations. I urge you to block any plans to expand deportations to El Salvador's prisons or create new overseas detention centers. These measures undermine America's commitment to human rights and the rule of law. Instead, immigration enforcement must occur through legitimate channels with robust due process protections for all individuals. Protecting human dignity should be non-negotiable, even for those accused of crimes. I respectfully request you use your authority to uphold these essential values.
