An Open Letter

March 26

As your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on the SAVE Act (H.R. 22 / S. 128) and the SAVE America Act (H.R. 7296 / S. 3752). It’s the “Save My Orange Fat Ass Act” and brazen hypocrisy according to Jimmy Kimmel. Non-citizens voting is already illegal. It is already prosecuted. And it is exceedingly rare. Even the Heritage Foundation has found just 100 cases since 2000 out of 1.5 billion ballots cast. Trump's own election integrity commission was disbanded in 2018 after failing to find evidence of widespread noncitizen voting. These bills would require voters to present a passport or birth certificate in person every time they register or update their registration, including after moving. That would block the registration methods 94% of Americans currently use, including online, by mail, and at the DMV. 21.3 million voting-age citizens lack ready access to these documents. Roughly half of all Americans do not have a valid passport. In West Virginia, only 20.7% do. In Mississippi, 22.1%. 69 million women have a birth certificate that does not match their current legal name due to marriage, divorce, or remarriage. Military families, adoptees, Americans born abroad, people with disabilities, and rural voters, among others all face disproportionate barriers. A new passport costs minimum $165. In some rural counties, voters would face a 7- to 8-hour round trip just to show documents at an election office. This is a poll tax in all but name. It’s unconstitutional and unconscionable. But what Republicans are hoping we’re missing is how the SAVE America Act goes so much further and a present an attempt to disenfranchise voters just to hold onto power. It would force states to hand over voter rolls to the Department of Homeland Security, creating a federal surveillance system of voters under an administration already flagging citizens, especially naturalized citizens, for removal based on inaccurate data. When Kansas enacted a similar law, 31,000 eligible citizens were blocked from registering. Only 28 noncitizens were stopped. Kansas's own Republican secretary of state has urged the country not to repeat that mistake. And this week, Trump voted by mail in a Florida special election, the same week he called mail-in voting "cheating" and pushed Congress to restrict it through this very bill. The hypocrisy tells you everything about the real intent. Please vote NO on the SAVE Act and the SAVE America Act and any bill that makes it harder for eligible Americans to vote.
